The Numbers

Minnesota is our home, and our inspiration. We wanted to create a restaurant with local character that celebrates our vibrant community. We started with a basic assumption: (almost) everything we need is right here.

We are proud to support local and sustainable farmers. Our short growing season means that every sprig of dill, every pea shoot and pepper and tomato, every cherry and apple is a cause for celebration. All year long, we work with local farmers raising animals for meat and dairy in a sustainable way, and growing grain organically. We believe in letting the ingredients speak for themselves.

We are proud to support the local economy. Not only do the dollars for about 50% of our food purchases go to local producers, we use local vendors whenever possible and employ over 60 full-time staff members.

We are proud to operate in an environmentally responsible way. All our food waste is composted – since opening in 2007, we've diverted hundreds of thousands of pounds of waste from landfills. Our catering operation also composts and provides compostable or reusable service ware for all events. The interior of our restaurant was designed using as many sustainable materials as possible, from reclaimed barnwood flooring and table tops to our counter made of recycled cardboard to salvaged materials used throughout, including lighting, windows, patio planters and more.

The Numbers

We track all of our purchases to show our customers and community where our food comes from.  Here is our most recent by-the-numbers look.

Local: Grown/Raised within a 250 mile radius of Common Roots.

Much of the local produce we buy is also organic. Almost all of the dairy products and flour we use is local, and we never serve meat that isn’t local and either grass-fed or free-range. We include produce from our garden in this category.

Organic, Not Local: Certified organic, but not from within a 250 mile radius.

We include wines that are not certified organic but are made with organically grown grapes.

Fair-Trade: Certified Fair Trade. Almost all of the fair-trade products we buy are also certified organic.

Sustainable Seafood: Ranked "good" or "best" by the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch program or certified organic.
